The Real Downsides of Studying in Malta ❗ Honest Review After 6 Months of Living Here
Hello☺️ We are a Korean couple currently studying in Malta.
In Part 1, I shared why I chose Malta and its advantages. Today, I’ll talk about the downsides I personally experienced after 6 months of living here.
- Strong Sunlight & High UV Index
- Inconvenient Public Transport
- Water Quality Issues
- Limited Shopping & Cultural Life
- High Rent & Low Wages
- Colder Winters Than Expected
1. Strong Sunlight & High UV Index
Malta’s Mediterranean climate means lots of sunny, dry days. However, the sun is very intense and can burn your skin quickly. In summer, UV levels often reach 9–11+, so sunscreen and a sunshade are essential.
2. Inconvenient Public Transport
There’s no subway or train—buses are the only public transport. Long waits, delays, and sudden route changes are common. Ride-hailing apps exist, but fares can start from €4–€5 depending on time and demand.
3. Water Quality Issues
Malta uses desalinated seawater for tap water, which is not suitable for drinking. Most people buy bottled water. Even shower filters can discolor within a day or two, showing the poor water quality.
4. Limited Shopping & Cultural Life
Few large shopping malls and limited brand variety. Clothing prices are high, and most stores close on Sundays & public holidays. Cultural venues like cinemas or galleries are mostly found in St. Julian’s.
5. High Rent & Low Wages
Foreign demand has pushed rents up sharply. Even outside the city center, monthly rent can be €900+. Jobs are competitive and wages average around €7/hour, which is low compared to housing costs.
6. Colder Winters Than Expected
While summers hit 40°C, winters feel damp and cold due to lack of heating. Many residents use electric blankets or portable heaters. If you’re staying long-term, bring warm bedding and clothes.
Final Thoughts
Malta isn’t without its challenges, but for us, the benefits still outweigh the downsides. We hope this honest review helps you decide if Malta is right for you.
