How to Recycle in Malta — Complete BCRS Guide
Turn bottles and cans into supermarket savings while helping the planet.
Hi! I’m JingJing, studying in beautiful Malta on the Mediterranean with my husband, Bongbong. 😌
Today, I’m going to share a great recycling tip I’ve learned during my six months of living here.
Turn bottles and cans into supermarket savings while helping the planet.
What is BCRS?
BCRS (Beverage Container Refund Scheme) is Malta’s nationwide recycling program. Return eligible plastic bottles, cans, and glass beverage containers to receive €0.10 per item as a supermarket voucher. It’s a simple, eco-friendly way to save money.
How to Find a BCRS Machine
Machines can be full at times. Check the official BCRS website before visiting:

Preparation & Tips
- Do not crush bottles or cans — keep them in original shape.
- Do not remove barcode labels.
- Rinse containers before returning them.
How to Use the Machine
- Find the green BCRS machine in a supermarket parking area.
- Insert each container with the barcode facing up.
- Check the screen for item count and refund total.
- Press Finish to print your voucher.
- Give the voucher to the cashier to apply the discount.
My Experience
I returned 27 containers and received a €2.70 voucher. It’s not a huge amount, but in Malta every little saving helps — and it feels great to recycle properly.
Can Travelers Use It?
Yes! Even short-term visitors can collect bottles and cans during their stay and exchange them for snacks or drinks at participating supermarkets.
